5: Everything was perfect except my shoe choice

I like the feel of this site more, with all the nature and openness. I feel like in the Roman archelogy site they had less space to make things open and less interactions with nature, like the birds and little animals we saw. All the ruins with the little flowers growing from them to me showed how not only is the life of the site extended by the people who dug it up/study it and by the people visiting and learning, but also it lends the area to life sources like greenery and animals. Very unfortunately I did not spot any cats, but I can imagine that they would have great spots of both sun and shade. Also, the water theme got me so excited for the ocean, another thing I loved about the location. I also loved the black and white mosaics and am so impressed by them. Each one that was not messed up in the repairs were so amazing, and honestly even the ones that werent correctly restored were so moving, like all the historical pieces here, imagining someone in another century making these pieces.

I am not sure how I would imagine myself fitting in, but the people at the lower end of the hierarchy (enslaved people) that had to spend their days manually milling the grains by just walking in circles is an upsetting way to spend a life, and the same goes to the animals that were made to walk in circles. However, if I was a rich man ♫ in this time period going to the bathhouses with a personal masseuse, life would probably be relaxing. There are just alot of ancient roles that I cannot see myself in, like taking part of any animal sacrifices where you have to subdue a bull and sever its spinal cord… safe to say as I am writing this in an air conditioned room that I was born in the right era.

Side note that the beach was amazing, the water, collecting shells, and a very yummy drink, that is the way I want to live. And the picnic at Ostia Antica under the cool shade with a bag of fresh mozzella was so yum! An amazing day overall 🙂 (For me, maybe not for my birkenstocks –> had to made a title reference)

The comment you made about the greenery growing from the ancient ruins was really good! It’s really cool to see any sort of life live on in these areas that used to be bustling with people. I made the same mistake wearing sandals to the ruins because I was too excited for the beach and had little rocks in my shoes all day long 😭

I also really liked our first outdoor day, because it made me realize there was more to Rome’s ruins than what was inside museums. This site in Ostia really showed me the intrcacies of the mosiacs the Romans made, and the pictures they painted. I loved the beach and swimming after all of the hot weather we endured.
