Toward the land of Vulcan
Our Naples Overnight Excusion
The whole of the bay of Naples (and really most of Italy) is determined by volcanic activity. This unique and inspiring landscape had a lasting effect on Roman (and Italic) culture. You’re probably familiar with Mount Vesuvius and how it buried Pompeii, but the whole bay is an even more ancient caldera. Wealth Romans vacationed at Baia to enjoy the hot springs and gorgeous coast line. Today Baia has an underground archaeological park for scuba divers! In ancient times one could consult an oracle of Apollo the Sybil of Cumae in her underground caves carved from the soft tufa cliffs; caves and tunnels that still awe visitors today. The Romans even told stories that the Campi Flegrei was the entrance to the underworld, no wonder! You can still see the sulfur gasses pouring out of the ground (image below).

Solo Presentation Topics
(a) Why is the Weary Hercules so tired and why should we care about this statue!?
(b) Why does this museum have a Secret Cabinet? Explain why it was created and argue whether you think it is still a useful way of organizing the collection?
Logistics
Today we catch a VERY early train to Naples, it is essential to meet on time. Pack light–no wheelie bags, just a small backpack or shoulder bag, such as can be easily checked in at the museum. I highly recommend packing a breakfast for the train, something filling with disposable packaging. Lunch is a long time away.
Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli
After the museum we will have an authentic Neapolitan Pizza lunch, before checking into the Hotel. You have the rest of the afternoon and evening to explore a new city. I highly recommend treating yourself to a sit down dinner of your favorite Italian cuisine. Naples restaurants are fantastic and often more affordable than Rome. Seafood is the other local specialty.
THemes
The intersection of Italic, Roman, and Greek cultures, historical cultures of collecting, the techniques and practicalities of making ancient art
Blog Prompt
Focus your post on just one museum objects or at most two (say a compare/contrast). What about it reminded you of things we’ve seen earlier on the trip and why? Does it speak to any of the following themes: militarism, the role of women, the role of religion, social hierarchies, other themes? Please also consider sharing your Neapolitan adventures with photos just for fun (and maybe some extra credit)!
