Isabel H- 14. Artifacts and Politics

305 words 2 minute read time

Today, I had the fantastic opportunity to hold historical artifacts at the American Academy in Rome. The Academy was insanely beautiful and reflected on how spaces create and inspire. To further explain this, it’s akin to the feeling of a place that encourages new ideas. I liked the open air of the central courtyard, as well as the view from the front when you arrive at the gates. I loved the giant cabinets that lined the office walls, which held the artifacts. I remember the archaeologist said that although the cabinets were beautiful, they were also not totally functional for their needs. I liked that we were able to choose each artifact we wanted to hold, as well as see votives, which I had been obsessed with while studying Roman art.

The conversation veered onto politics, which I was not opposed to. Still, it also provided an interesting perspective, especially given the current state of affairs in America under the current administration. I felt assured that, after the archaeologist said that Italy had survived many years of fascism, we should hold out. I found it interesting to learn about the political structure of Italy and how they vote.

After that, I went on the pilgrimage with Julia, Tina, and Khadijah, which was super exciting. I made the pilgrimage not only to walk through the Holy Doors but also to pray, as my Mom and Grandmother wanted me to. When walking on the pilgrimage, I thought it would be a slower pace, but we were basically running through it. Walking through the doors was amazing, and it was stunning to witness it. The art was terrific, and the overwhelming feeling I experienced upon entering the space is one I always enjoy, especially in a religious context. I am so glad I was able to experience it.

The interior of St. Peter's Basilica was gorgeous! I'm so glad we went on the pilgrimage together. I was planning to visit the Vatican on the second weekend, not realizing its popularity beforehand, but it was already too late when I tried to book a ticket with a time that worked for me. So I move on and put Vatican onto my "there will always be a next time" list. The pilgrimage was a great opportunity to see parts of the Vatican right before we left Rome. Not to mention, we also walk through the holy door that opens once every 25 years!

The stars really aligned with this trip! Getting to visit Rome during the Jubilee and getting to walk through the holy door is really a once-in-a-lifetime experience! That guy really had us speedwalking the pilgrimage, but I’m just glad I now get to say that I did it. The church really was magnificent, and the archaeological experience was top tier! It was a very hot, busy day, but a really fun one!
