Day 0: Dress To Impress

313 words, 2 minutes read time.

So far, my experience has been really calm and according-to-plan, which has let me think about all the fun things I hope to do when I land in Rome! I am excited to see our apartment and go for a walk around our neighborhood to get acclimated, and have some real food.

Plane (plain) food

One thing that surprised me from the readings was the sheer amount of documents and other legal items that are necessary to carry around. Especially as someone who frequently uses my phone to pay for my items and will leave my entire wallet at home, having to remember so many things to bring with you on any given day just to drive seems exhausting.

I spent my time in the airport waiting for my flight doing the readings and listening to music, so I didn’t end up having any conversations with anyone until I met up with other classmates at the gate. The advice I received from my family basically surrounded around arriving at the airport very early (almost 4 hours before departure) and keeping a strict and unwavering eye on my passport and belongings. My family was understandably worried, and it had caused me some stress since I had never traveled outside the country, let alone the state, without friends or family. However, as the process went on and I breezed through bag check and security, I was a lot more relaxed and my anxiety became excitement for the weeks ahead.

Being more relaxed let me enjoy the readings more, and one quote that I thought was funny was on page 56 in chapter 2:

“a cyclist dresses like a champion and dress rivalry starts in nursery school.”

I didn’t realize how serious fashion was in Italy, and it did make me a bit nervous about the clothes I packed, I do hope I dress to impress.

This is great. I really love the Yawn pattern on your plane outfit juxtaposed with the thoughts on Italian fashion. You’re very stylish and bold and I think you’ll fit right in.

When you finish writing add the word count to the top of the post along with the minutes to read (you’ll find this on side panel under the post options tab). Also get creative with your titles and make them echo some of the themes in your post. Examples for this post might be: “0: Plane (Plain) Food” Or “Zero: Dress to Impress” The best part of wordpress is we can always update and change our posts as we go along!

I relate airplane food being plain and looking forward to a real meal, even though I have to say that this was one of the best meals I have probably had on a plane! I am going to have to go home and look up lemon blondie recipes and just looking at the picture makes me miss it. You definitely are dressing to impress because I can recall how cute your outfit was and the necklace with the little fish and pearl on it! I also am so reliant on apple pay I feel like needing my wallet is a big mental adjustment.

I must comment about the “forgetting” of things. I am a serial “forgetter”! I have lost countless things so much so that my parents once thought that someone was taking my things at school. I must say that I was extremely stressed before leaving as well. I was mainly stressed about forgetting something because of the amount of important things I had to carry. My mom’s tip is to minimize the things you hold. Because each object in your pocket or your hand requires a part of your attention both intentionally and unintentionally. Also, I am the opposite of you when it comes to paying. I love the physical card, not the apple pay. It stresses me out. I lost my wallet (or so I thought) a week before leaving. I asked for a replacement and they gave it to someone else. I asked for a new one but it arrived the day after we arrived in Rome. So, I am here with applepay exclusively.

Also I really like the way you write. It is very “flowy”. I know that I am making these words up, but oh well!

Having to carry so many documents is very frustrating! I get nervous bringing my passport around, especially with all the talk of pickpockets. I agree with you, half the time in the US I don’t even carry my wallet.

    Hi Khadija!
“I am excited to see our apartment and go for a walk around our neighborhood to get acclimated, and have some real food.” I love how you mentioned walking around our neighborhood, being in a new country where nobody knows who you are, is like having a chance to put out a new personality. I also agree on getting “real food”; what the airline provided was not the best.

I am also an apple pay/tap to pay warrior. I usually don’t carry my wallet either so having to keep track of everything especially my passport. I definitely heard my mom and grandma’s voice in my ear to not lose it.
