So far, my experience has been really calm and according-to-plan, which has let me think about all the fun things I hope to do when I land in Rome! I am excited to see our apartment and go for a walk around our neighborhood to get acclimated, and have some real food.

One thing that surprised me from the readings was the sheer amount of documents and other legal items that are necessary to carry around. Especially as someone who frequently uses my phone to pay for my items and will leave my entire wallet at home, having to remember so many things to bring with you on any given day just to drive seems exhausting.

I spent my time in the airport waiting for my flight doing the readings and listening to music, so I didn’t end up having any conversations with anyone until I met up with other classmates at the gate. The advice I received from my family basically surrounded around arriving at the airport very early (almost 4 hours before departure) and keeping a strict and unwavering eye on my passport and belongings. My family was understandably worried, and it had caused me some stress since I had never traveled outside the country, let alone the state, without friends or family. However, as the process went on and I breezed through bag check and security, I was a lot more relaxed and my anxiety became excitement for the weeks ahead.
Being more relaxed let me enjoy the readings more, and one quote that I thought was funny was on page 56 in chapter 2:
“a cyclist dresses like a champion and dress rivalry starts in nursery school.”
I didn’t realize how serious fashion was in Italy, and it did make me a bit nervous about the clothes I packed, I do hope I dress to impress.
